After a few more days of rain, the region is beginning to look a lot greener. Now I have to mow the lawn…

The weather for the weekend is actually looking pretty good, if you want clear weather, through Sunday. Labor Day itself is the iffy looking day as a cold front looks to be pushing into northern Michigan in the morning.

Friday, temperatures will range from around 70 near The Soo, while near Houghton Lake and Traverse City, the high temperatures will be in the mid 70s.

Saturday and Sunday, the temperatures are expected to be around 80 degrees from the Soo to Houghton Lake.

Labor Day, with the cold front in the area, expect the chance for showers and thunderstorms and temperatures ranging from around 70 in the Soo (north of the front) to around 80 near Houghton Lake (south of the front).

Looking at the following weekend with the 8-14 day outlook, temperatures will be near normal with above normal precipitation. The normals can be found here. However, the normal high temperatures range from the upper 60s in eastern upper Michigan to the lower 70s near Houghton Lake and Traverse City. So we are beginning to slide into the fall.

In the upcoming weeks, I’ll have links to the fall color tour and have weekend forecasts for the area. With school coming upon us, my schedule should slow down a bit so that I can write up the weekend forecasts more regularly. Of course, the winter season is usually the big time for weather up north anyway.

I’m going to try and look over the next week. This will be general, as the summer has gone, and I’ll try and remember to get to this next week. My guess is that we will begin to see cooler weather as out normal temperatures are beginning to fall a bit. As of today, the normal high temperature is in the lower 70s in eastern upper Michigan and middle 70s in northern lower Michigan. After receiving a fair amount of rain yesterday and last night, some of the region is beginning to green up a bit, however, there is still a burn ban in effect for most of northern Michigan. With high pressure still over the region, things will dry out again, until Tuesday, when the next chance for rain is expected.

For the following week, the 8-14 day outlook, posted by the Climate Prediction Center, is showing near normal temperatures with below normal precipitation. So if you like the 70s for your highs with no rain, then the next two weeks are for you. The Labor Day weekend may not be bad for the last day of summer fun.

Lots of things have been happening in the house, and with the rather drought like conditions as of the last few weeks, not posting doesn’t look like it was a bad thing necessarily. That looks like it will continue over this weekend as the forecast through Saturday night is for dry weather again. Sunday there is a chance for rain as another weak cold front tries to make it through the region and might bring us some rain. We did get some rain a couple of nights ago, but the NWS reported a whole 0.01″ from it. We may have gotten more in Boyne Falls, but not by much. So the forecast for the weekend is dry with a chance of rain on Sunday. Stay tuned, I’m willing to bet that the cold front goes through dry again. As several older meteorologists used to tell me, “don’t forecast rain when you are in the middle of a drought.” That adage is true here as well.

Temperatures look to range from the middle to upper 80s for northern lower and eastern upper Michigan.

If you are going camping, please be careful as the forests are very dry. As this post is going on there is a now 19,000+ acre fire in Luce county (eastern upper Michigan) north of Newberry and west of Tahquamenon Falls State Park. This one was started by lightning, which is rare, but does happen. So if you are doing any campfires, be cautious.
