The weekend is shaping up to be fine, with high pressure expected to take over the region. However, first, on Thursday night and Friday morning, a cold front will move through northern Michigan. By the looks of the forecast put out by the folks at the NWS office in Gaylord, MI, the day will turn out sunny, even in northeast lower Michigan where the rain is trying to hang on Friday morning. So as it stands now, Friday afternoon through Monday will be sunny to partly cloudy.

High temperatures through the weekend will be pretty good as well. High temperatures for
Friday and Saturday will be in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Sunday will be in the lower 80s, but it looks like the high pressure moves to the east of Michigan allowing for strong southerly winds to pump the heat and humidity into the region. So the high temperature for Monday, Labor Day, will be near 90 degrees. We haven’t had to many of days near 90 this summer. All things being equal, it looks like northern Michigan will end up around normal for high temperatures this summer.

On the 8-14 day outlook, Temperatures for the following weekend look to be above normal and the precipitation will be near normal. The normals for this time of year are around 70 near the Soo to the lower 70s near Houghton Lake and Traverse City.

It is looking like it will be a nice weekend if you want to be outside. The only people who won’t like it will be the gardeners as the rain will be skimpy through the weekend.

However, if you want to hike, camp, boat, or just get out, it looks like it will be dry. There is a threat of a thunderstorm on Saturday and Sunday as there will be some moisture in the region, but with no front to move in and force the moisture upward, it is unlikely that there will be any rain.

Temperatures on both days will be around or in the lower 80s and some spots could see the middle or even the upper 80s on Sunday.

Normal high temperatures are for the upper 70s in the middle of August with mid 70s in eastern upper Michigan. So we are seeing the last hurrah of the summer. The first frost won’t be too far away. Which means that Fall and hunting season are just around the corner. The podcast will have to wait this week. If I get a chance I’ll record it Friday.

Change is inevitable in the weather business. Just as things looked good for a great outdoor weekend, a system, which some people have pointed out was predicted by a few models, now looks like it will impact northern Michigan. Following the maps starting tonight through Sunday morning, a strong cold front that will bring rain showers on Saturday. High pressure will build in on Sunday, clearing things out. High temperatures will have trouble getting out of the 60s on Saturday and Sunday. So being outside on Saturday will be less than ideal, and Sunday will be dry and cool, with a few showers near Alpena on Sunday.

The weather looks great at this point as High pressure will be over the great lakes for the weekend. The only problem could be Sunday night, if the high most out of the region faster. So at worst, it will be partly sunny, but more likely it will be mostly sunny and warm. Highs will range from the mid to upper 70s or around 80 degrees.

Looking down the road at next weekend the 8-14 day outlook is for below normal for temperatures and precipitation. Looking at the normal temperatures at Gaylord, the highs are in the upper 70s.

So we have gotten past the peak of meteorological summer, Which means our temperatures will be slowly falling toward the autumn season.
