The preview for the weekend looks like Friday we have the leftover lake effect rain. Saturday and Sunday High pressure builds into the region. Highs on Saturday mid 50s. Highs on Sunday, lower 60s.

The leaves are a changing. Much better color now. This weekend should be a good early color tour pleaser.

No chance to do the update podcast. However, as I said in the previous post and on the podcast, “Never trust a cold front coming through the region,” and although I thought it would remain dry. The front now looks like it will have scattered showers as it goes across northern Michigan Saturday afternoon through Sunday. So if you are out camping, you could run into some moisture on Saturday night. Otherwise, the forecast looks the same.

The weather for this weekend looks good in some ways and not so in others. As the weather story graphic from the NWS at Gaylord, MI, says the first part of the weekend will be pretty nice. Sunday, may not be as nice as we slide into a more fall like start to the work week.

Okay, for the details Friday will be warm with some areas possibly touch the 80 degree mark. This gets harder and harder as the normal high temperatures are in the mid 60s for northern lower Michigan. This will carry over into Saturday as a low pressure area will bring southwest winds and keep things warm. Late into the day and overnight the low will begin to fall apart and bring in strong cold front. So by Sunday morning the front will be in Lake Huron. So the forecast for Sunday will be cool. We’re looking at the 60s for the highs. If this all happens, then there will be no rain out of this. So odds are that you won’t have to worry about getting washed out. However, always be careful when a front is coming through the region, because it could rain. The last couple of days, it doesn’t look like it will.

So hiking and camping will be great, as will hunting.

The foliage is beginning to change up north. The Foliage Network has the details on its site, but the color is changing. The map is showing that there is change north of what looks to be M-32, with little change seen south of there. So you will see some color if you are driving around.

If you look closely, at my picture, you can see that there is a bit more red and yellow out there and not just green. So the color change is underway.

The 8-14 day outlook for the next weekend looks like it will be above normal tempertures with normal precipitation. I’m not sure I agree with that, as the trend for the rest of the new week is for below normal temperatures. So it will be intersting to see what happens next weekend.

So to recap, Friday night and Saturday, warm and partly cloudy. Sunday, will probably be partly to mostly cloudy with much cooler temperatures, which are more like the normal high temperatures. There is a slight risk of rain at this point Saturday night into Sunday, but it is a very low chance at this point.

At this point, it looks like the forecast through the weekend will be dry and high temperatures will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Right now, there looks to be cold front moving through on Saturday, but the NWS folks have it as a dry passage. So they only expect the temperatures to cool a bit on Sunday.

The trees are noticeably changing color now so some this weekend could be a pretty good weekend for early color. I’ve always been partial to the mix of reds and yellows with the green.

Looks like the rain will be gone soon. The low temperatures tonight are going to be in the lower 30s north of the Straits, and around 40 south. Highs Sunday will be in the 60s, with the coolest temperatures near Lake Huron. Looks like it will be sunny to partly cloudy on Sunday as well.

The weather story graphic from the NWS in Gaylord says it all. There are some small chances for rain showers on Saturday as a cold front moves through, but on the whole, not a bad weekend. Temperatures will be cooler, but they are in line with the normal high temperatures.

So the forecast for getting out this weekend will be great. If the low chances of rain doesn’t scare you, camping and backpacking will be great with the 60s highs and the 40s lows.

As far as the color is concerned, the trees are showing a little more, but not enough for doing a tour yet. Go to the Foliage Network for more.

Hunting looks good, as far as the weather is concerned. In fact the 8-14 day outlook from CPC is looking like we will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s and with normal to below normal precipitation.

One thing that I noticed that the ferns and other ground cover are beginning to brown and dry out. Now this weekend won’t be so dry that there will be a fire danger, however, we are heading into the second fire weather season, so it would be good to be careful with open fires.

Also check out the NWS Gaylord Recreational forecast for the Straits area. After November 1st it will convert to a snow rec forecast. I’ll be linking to it this year.

I’m hoping to get to the forecast, but my daughter and son-in-law are expecting their 2nd child. She is ready to deliver anytime now, coupled with work, I’m not sure when I’ll get to the full forecast. I will say this, it looks like it will rain most of Saturday and there will be scattered rain showers on Sunday. So unless you like the rain, it doesn’t look great to be outdoors. High temperatures will be in the mid 60s through the weekend as well.

If she delivers and the hospital has WiFi, I can get one out while I wait.

I have no connection to the Foliage network, but I do guide people that way, because it is a great site to see where the leaves are changing. So again for this year as we slide into autumn, I will be linking to the Foliage network’s Midwest Report for what is going on in Michigan, with a description of the weather for the color tours and what I see on my commutes around northwest lower Michigan where I live. The first report is what one would expect, that is no real color change.

From the NWS Gaylord web site weather story this morning:

A warm front will move in from the west Saturday. It may kick off a shower or two, especially in the afternoon west of I-75. A better shot of rain arrives Sunday into Monday, as a weather system approaches from the northwest. High temperatures through the period will be mainly within a few degrees of 70.
